Welcome to The Bar is Low’s First Review! District Lounge, You’re up First
Welcome to the very first post on The Bar is Low!
I’m so excited to kick off this journey where I’ll be reviewing bars in and around Orange County. I’m hoping to find the best spot in OC on this journey, because, well, so far the bar is low. If you have any suggestions, leave them in the comments!
My goal is to give you an honest and reliable take on local spots, so whether you're looking for a new place to hit up on the weekends or a low-key spot for happy hour, I got your back. Since this is the start of something new, I’ll be introducing you to my grading scale and how I’m breaking things down. Let’s dive right into it!
The Grading Scale: What to Expect
To keep things consistent, every bar I review will be graded based on five key categories. Each of these categories will get its own score, and at the end of each post, I’ll tally them up to give the bar an overall score out of 25.
Here’s the breakdown:
- Drinks: This is where I’ll evaluate the overall experience of the drinks, which includes the price and quality. Are they overpriced, watery, or just right? That’s what you’ll find out here.
- Crowd: The crowd can make or break your experience. I’ll be looking at the age range, energy levels, and how the crowd affects the atmosphere. Is it full of your friends or your enemies? Older crowd or younger crowd? Rowdy or chill?
- Bartenders: Friendly, helpful bartenders can make the experience better. Were they nice, quick, or were they standoffish and slow? I’ll rate their vibe, customer service, and drink-making skills here.
- Music: The music played makes a HUGE impact on the night. To me, this is arguably the most important category. I’ll be scoring the music selection based on genre, yes, but more so if it’s only throwbacks (it gets old), only classic rock (let’s move on maybe), a good mix of everything, or a perfect playlist.
- Overall Vibe: This is the final rating of the bar’s atmosphere, based on everything above. Here, I’ll score the general feel of the bar on a scale of 1-5 stars. Does it have the kind of energy you want to come back to, or does it fall flat?
The District Lounge, Orange, CA
For my inaugural post, I decided to check out The District Lounge in Orange, California. Located right in well known Old Town Orange, and conveniently a couple blocks away from my apartment, it seemed like the perfect spot to kick off my bar review journey.
After spending a night there, here’s how it stacked up:
- Drinks (3/5): The drink menu was decent but not mind-blowing. The prices were fair for the area, but the quality could’ve been a bit better (a little watered down, yes). The drinks weren’t bad, but they weren’t memorable either.
- Crowd (4/5): The crowd can vary immensely depending on the night you go. Luckily, I went on a Thursday, so the crowd was younger (what I prefer, this score may different based on your ideal vibe), and it wasn’t too rowdy. Crowd was fun, chill, and had no weird energy.
- Bartenders (3/5): The bartenders were fine, but they didn’t go out of their way to be friendly. Service was quick, and they got the job done, but there was no extra flair or interaction that made the experience stand out.
- Music (3.5/5): The music wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great. They were playing a solid mix of 2000s throwbacks and some current hits. But that can get old because everyone is having a great time, and next thing you know it’s Lil Jon playing. If you’re someone who does not care too much about the music, again your score would probably be different. But music matters! 3.5/5.
- Overall Vibe (3.5/5): The vibe of the D was chill but not super memorable. It’s the kind of place you can go because it’s close to your apartment or close to campus and you know a lot of people are going, but it’s not the type of spot you’d be raving about to your friends the next day. I’d say it’s a solid choice if you’re in the area, but it probably wouldn’t be your first choice for a night out.
Final Score
Fun Fact
DID YOU KNOW? That the first bar-like establishments are believed to have originated in ancient Mesopotamia around 3,500 BCE, where taverns or alehouses served fermented drinks like beer. These early drinking spots, often run by women, were a central part of Sumerian society. One of the oldest examples comes from the city of Uruk, and the Code of Hammurabi even had laws regulating such establishments.
