Business Trip to Sonora, California
What started as a group project for Practical Advantage, our COMM 474 capstone class, turned into a weekend packed with adventure, teamwork, and meaningful work in Sonora, California. Along with my classmates, we hit the road to support our client, the Central Sierra Economic Development District (CSEDD). The mission? Gather content for their social media, distribute flyers, connect with locals and government officials, and get hands-on experience in the communities we’ve been serving from afar.
For my last blog post, I’m switching it up yet again! We did bars, coffee shops, one book review, and now I’m going to write about my trip to Sonora, California. Consider me a travel blog now!

Taking Our Work to the Field
CSEDD serves five counties in the Sierra Nevada region, and while we’ve been working diligently for months, it’s hard to truly grasp the spirit of a place without being there. This trip allowed us to bridge that gap and really immerse ourselves. From walking through charming downtown areas to meeting with community members and stakeholders, the experience gave us a new appreciation for the work we’re doing.
We spent our weekend driving through all five counties, splitting the journeys between Saturday and Sunday. Our drives took us through breathtaking landscapes and winding roads, each new destination offering its own unique charm. The highlight? Bear Valley Peak. Standing 8,000-9,000 feet above sea level, the views were stunning and made the long hours on the road worth every minute.

More Than Just a Group Project
What’s funny is that when this started, it felt like just another group project. But as we’ve worked together to launch CSEDD’s social media presence and bolster their marketing efforts, it’s become so much more. We’re not just students completing an assignment—we’re helping a client build a platform to connect with their community and drive economic growth.
There’s a lot of responsibility in that, and it’s something our team takes seriously. At the same time, we’re having so much fun doing it. Spending 12-hour days together could have been exhausting, but with such an incredible group, the time flew by. We supported each other, laughed through the challenges, and celebrated our wins.

Lessons from the Road
This trip wasn’t just about checking off tasks on a to-do list. It was about stepping out of the classroom, seeing the impact of our work firsthand, and growing as a team. The weekend was full of unexpected fun, beautiful scenery, and a deeper connection to the project we’ve poured so much into.

As we move forward, this trip will stand out as a pivotal moment in our journey with CSEDD. It’s one thing to strategize from a distance; it’s another to walk the streets, meet the people, and see the potential for growth in action. I’m so grateful for this experience and even more excited to continue this project with my team.
Here’s to blending work, learning, and adventure—and making an impact along the way!
