Contra Coffee — Do they Pass the Test?
Contra Coffee, Orange, CA
Welcome back to The Bar is Low! I think this will be the last week of reviewing coffee shops. I’ve had fun with it, but I’m ready to switch it up again, and then go back to bars the last week or two to honor The Bar is Low’s start. Coffee shops have been more fun for me I think because it’s almost a daily occurrence for me. One of my roommates and I’s favorite thing to do is walk to get a coffee since we live so close to so many different options. I love to do homework in coffee shops and I do really believe they are an important third space in communities. It’s fun to review bars and I loved the concept but it just got old. Anyways, let’s get into it!
Contra Coffee has a unique background. Founded by Julie Nguyen and Sal Olvera, it started as a mobile taproom and now shares a permanent space with the nonprofit 1888 Center, supporting local arts and creating a community hub. They have a lot of little events, live music, or sometimes open mic nights! There’s a stationary shop and a shop for records. All of their drinks are non dairy as well which makes it easy for everyone to find something they like. I love going here because it’s always a fun vibe…maybe sometimes not the best for homework as it can get loud.

Quality of drinks - 5/5: The drinks are really good! They have a huge menu, so there really is an option for everyone. I love the strawberry matcha—I can’t remember what it’s called right now. They have brown sugar lattes, horchata lattes, a variety of teas, and truthfully so much more. They’re all good options.
Customer service - 5/5: Everyone is really nice here. They’re down to suggest drinks and start fun conversations!
Seating - 3/5: They lose some points here because it can be really hard to get a table. It’s not their fault, everyone loves coming here…but warning, it can be hard to get a table.
Parking - 5/5: There’s a ton of options around the area, so parking is never a problem!
Overall vibe - 4.5/5: For the overall vibe, I would say 4.5/5! I think the fact that it can be so busy is a pro and a con—it’s hard to get some work done, but it can be a fun place to chill. The seats are kind of funky, so I dock them a little for that as well. But they have a cool story and the coffee is great!
Final score
After tallying all that up, Contra gets 90%, so an A!

Fun Fact
I’m skipping the fun facts this week because I’m over it LOL like you guys don’t need anymore fun facts. Instead I’ll leave you with words of encouragement from Madame VP Kamala Harris:
“Only when it is dark enough can you see the stars. Let us fill the sky with the light of a brilliant, brilliant billion of stars—light of optimism, of faith, of truth and service.”
Thanks for tuning in to The Bar is Low! As always, drop me a comment if you have any suggestions for where I should check out next. See you next week!
